holding company. Collectively, CNAF and its subsidiaries are referred to as CNA

terms refer to the business of CNA and its subsidiaries. Our property and
casualty insurance operations are conducted by Continental Casualty
Company (CCC), incorporated in 1897, and The Continental Insurance
Company (CIC), organized in 1853, and affiliates. CIC became a subsidiary of
ours in 1995 as a result of the acquisition of The Continental
Corporation (Continental). Loews Corporation (Loews) owned approximately 89% of
our outstanding common stock as of December 31, 2007.
